Dylan

A yawn escaped my lips as I slowly walked down the stairs, eyes bleary from lack of sleep. I hadn't slept in three days and decided to work overnight instead, but I couldn't concentrate, so I went down for some water. My lack of sleep had already messed with my schedule. Although I couldn't point out an exact reason for my sleeplessness, I knew Eva had to be involved in some way.

My sleepless nights had started the day we decided to move her into my house. I didn’t get much sleep a day until her arrival, and for the two nights they had been here, it continued. I blamed this on my body being uncomfortable with relative strangers in my home. But I wasn’t sure that was the real problem.

Jake seemed like a great kid and Eva was far from a stranger.

I padded softly to the kitchen and paused when I noticed the lights. Eva was sitting on the kitchen counter, staring at the dark window. Her back was to me, so I couldn’t see what she was doing.

“Eva?” I said gently and walked toward her.

“Expecting a different woman in your kitchen late at night?”

I chuckled softly.

“I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t seeing some ghost disguised as you.”

“Ghosts?” Her eyes went wide and she looked around. “I wouldn’t be surprised if this place is haunted.”

I reached into the fridge for the carton of milk.

“Are you curious about the story of this one?”

She looked unsure.

“Something tells me not to ask, but you know how I love freaking myself out, so let’s hear it. A few nights with made-up nightmares is worth it.”

I reached for a glass in the cabinet.

“Do you want some milk?”

She nodded, and I grabbed another glass.

“How about we make a deal?” I suggested as I passed her the milk. “Let’s trade information. I tell you what I know, and you tell me why you're sitting on my kitchen counter.”

I leaned against the sink, and at this angle, I had a clear view of Eva. She had unfolded her legs, and they were currently hanging off the edge of the counter. My eyes were drawn to her exposed legs and up to her thigh, where the rest of her legs were covered in shorts. Seeing her like this brought back a lot of memories, pleasurable ones, from the resort. I scolded myself to avoid getting turned on by her thighs. I wasn’t some thirteen year old seeing a gorgeous woman’s skin for the first time.

“I haven’t been able to sleep very well since we came here.” Eva sipped her milk. “It's nothing to do with you, I think it’s just the change of environment. I don’t really do well in new places. Also, now I don’t see myself sleeping anytime soon since you mentioned ghosts.”

I chuckled. “I've been living here for almost eight years now and nothing has happened…so far.”

I couldn’t help teasing her.

“Ghost stories always seem to start when there's a trigger,” she replied. “And most times, it’s when a new person moves in.
